Virginia Button, Ph.D, the Courtauld Institute of Art


Ginny is an art historian and curator, with expertise in modern and contemporary British Art. She has an MA and PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, and has worked with art and artists for over 30 years. Her first teaching roles in the 1980s were for American Universities in London (Syracuse and Maryland).

 

At the Tate Gallery (1991-2001) she became Tate Britain’s Senior Curator responsible for managing collection displays, and curated major exhibitions including the Turner Prize (1993-1998). Moving to Cornwall in 2001 she worked at Falmouth University, leading MA Curatorial Practice and was Director of Falmouth School of Art until 2018.

 

In freelance roles Ginny has worked for the Royal College of Art, London, Dundee’s College of Art & Design Scotland, The British Council in Uzbekistan, and is a Visiting lecturer at Goldsmiths University, London and Exeter University. She has written extensively, authoring books on artists such as Lucian Freud and is Chair of The Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and a trustee of Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange.
