Songs and Dances for Bassoon and Piano

Mavroudes Troullos, Bassoon / Lily Maisky, Piano

Mavroudes Troullos and Lily Maisky have invented a program for two instruments that rarely come together: the bassoon and the piano. The piano, either solo or in chamber music, may be more familiar but the bassoon is rarely played solo. Yet its potential is immense: sometimes full of nostalgia - think of the opening of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” – and sometimes full of humor, the bassoon can express an extraordinary range of emotions, from the grotesque to the melancholy to the sentimental.

Our two musicians are presenting a program of transcriptions of songs from Schumann, Poulenc, Falla, Tchaikovsky..., transcriptions of works originally written for cello and piano by Bloch, and orchestral/piano works such as Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances. A highly festive and original program!
