Yet, as James Hillman argues in Pan and the Nightmare (1972), Pan never truly perished; he retreated into the human unconscious. Through the primordial music of the aulos and the primitive vibration of the double-reed, this sonic exploration penetrates the historic silence and traces the god's transformation into the hidden anxieties of the modern psyche.
