Robert Capa in a Paris café in 1951 by Ruth Orkin

Robert Capa was the inventor of a whole new style: the war photographer, eye glued to the lens, and always on the lookout for a scoop. He was witness to the major historical events of the 20th century, from the Spanish Civil War, the D-Day landings in Normandy and the French war in Indochina and also friends with and portraitist of some of the great cultural figures of his day from Ernest Hemingway to Pablo Picasso. With strong convictions of his own, Capa’s gaze left a lasting mark on the history of photojournalism and forged the identity of the committed modern war photographer.

The Musée de la Libération de Paris in collaboration with Magnum Photos, presents a fresh look at Robert Capa’s work. Over sixty vintage press prints are displayed alongside magazines, books, documents, and personal items. Together, these one hundred and sixty pieces retrace the life and career of a young Hungarian Jewish immigrant to France who became an international modern photography icon.
